The Dewey House
If you’re looking for a New England vacation that is both unique and historical, then you’re in for a treat. The Dewey House is not only a listed national landmark on the National Register of Historic Places but also an architectural wonder, boasting multiple styles that set it apart from other houses in the area. The first iteration of the house is a bit of a mystery, as there’s no record of building plans. Still, architectural experts estimate that the original home, a traditional clapboard house, was built sometime around 1876 by a well-known wool mill owner, A.G. Dewey, at age 71. Dewey, whose ancestry traces back to settlers from the Mayflower, was a local figure best known for his innovation, business savvy, and civic pride.
The home has seen multiple remodels, renovations, and add-ons by family members, turning it into a unique mix of various influences. These embellishments are unusual for the area, making the Dewey House a true standout. Inside, the Dewey House strikes a balance between restoration and updates, giving guests the best of the old and the new. Thanks to the add-ons by multiple owners, the house boasts a one-of-a-kind floor plan that has to be experienced firsthand. The home's various sitting nooks are the perfect place to find peace & quiet to enjoy some time reading a good book or to sip on your morning coffee. All the while, the home still caters to multiple family gatherings with its large sitting room, expandable formal dining room table, and generous number of sleeping spaces.
If that’s not impressive enough, then the roughly acre-sized property seals the deal. The house sits on an old mill complex and is among only a handful of the original 63 structures. Nestled on lovingly manicured grounds surrounded by old-growth trees, the Dewey House sits on a bluff overlooking a pond the locals call “Dewey’s Pond,” as well as the rolling hills beyond. With views this stunning all year long, you may never want to leave the enormous back deck.
