The Dewey House

Designed and built by A.G. Dewey, a prominent local wool mill owner, the Dewey House is a stunning example of early 20th-century Georgian Revival architecture. Warm up next to the cozy fire in the drawing room or enjoy the adventures you’ll have exploring the three levels of living space. This stunning vacation home has incredible views of Dewey’s Pond and rolling hills off the back deck.

If you’re looking for a New England vacation that is both unique and historical, then you’re in for a treat. The Dewey House is not only a listed national landmark on the National Register of Historic Places but also an architectural wonder, boasting multiple styles that set it apart from other houses in the area. The first iteration of the house is a bit of a mystery, as there’s no record of building plans. Still, architectural experts estimate that the original home, a traditional clapboard house, was built sometime around 1876 by a well-known wool mill owner, A.G. Dewey, at age 71. Dewey, whose ancestry traces back to settlers from the Mayflower, was a local figure best known for his innovation, business savvy, and civic pride.

The home has seen multiple remodels, renovations, and add-ons by family members, turning it into a unique mix of various influences. These embellishments are unusual for the area, making the Dewey House a true standout. Inside, the Dewey House strikes a balance between restoration and updates, giving guests the best of the old and the new. Thanks to the add-ons by multiple owners, the house boasts a one-of-a-kind floor plan that has to be experienced firsthand. The home's various sitting nooks are the perfect place to find peace & quiet to enjoy some time reading a good book or to sip on your morning coffee. All the while, the home still caters to multiple family gatherings with its large sitting room, expandable formal dining room table, and generous number of sleeping spaces.

If that’s not impressive enough, then the roughly acre-sized property seals the deal. The house sits on an old mill complex and is among only a handful of the original 63 structures. Nestled on lovingly manicured grounds surrounded by old-growth trees, the Dewey House sits on a bluff overlooking a pond the locals call “Dewey’s Pond,” as well as the rolling hills beyond. With views this stunning all year long, you may never want to leave the enormous back deck.

House Notes
You’ll find the spacious master bedroom located at the top of the second-floor stairs. Enter through a light-filled sitting room, equipped with a twin-size day bed perfect for the kids, through an open closet area to find a queen-sized bed.  Attached is a comfortable lounge/dressing room that overlooks Dewey’s Pond and has an ensuite bathroom (tub only). On the other end of the second floor is another generously sized bedroom with a queen bed. Separated by a door, there is an attached bedroom with two twin sized beds – making this a perfect family suite. Finishing out the second floor is a 3/4 bath in the hallway that serves both bedrooms. On the third floor there are two more bedrooms – each equipped with a queen size bed, and one with an ensuite bath (shower/tub combo). Back down to the first floor, you’ll find the “Map Room” located off the formal dining room - which has an attached bathroom with a tub. It’s the perfect cozy spot for the kids to hang out, and even has a pull-out, queen-sized sleeper sofa. The home sleeps 10 in beds, with additional sleeping for 1 on the daybed attached to the master and 2 located on the sleeper sofa in the “Map Room” – making a max occupancy of 13. The driveway is located across the street, with room for up to 4 vehicles on the paved area and an additional 2 spaces in the garage. Please note that check in time is 3pm, and check out time is 10am. One dog allowed with prior approval!
